Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Paul used his testimony often as a way of sharing the gospel. In the book of Acts Paul shared his testimony in chapter 22 and again in chapter 26. He uses different details, but they are both similar in recounting his meeting the Lord on the road to Damascus.
The testimony is a powerful tool. It is personal and real. People can argue against our apologetics and doctrine, but they can’t argue about our testimony. The Pharisees were very upset when Jesus healed a man born blind. They knew that the blind man was “born in sin.” The blind man didn’t try to debate any of their arguments. He simply stated,
John 9:25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
It is similar with our testimony. If it works, we have much to share. If it doesn’t work, we have nothing to share.
Years ago on a video, Howard Hendricks, a professor at Dallas Seminary was trying to sell hair tonic. It was absolutely positively guaranteed to work. Howard Hendricks was as bald as a billiard ball. He used that illustration to show the importance of having a testimony that is real, that actually works.
The world needs to see a Christian whose life has changed. They need to see a power that is found in Jesus Christ that is available to them. Our testimony includes three things:
1. What we were before we met Christ. (It will always be a path that is familiar to all who are unsaved.)
2. What happened when we met Christ.
3. The change that He made in our life.
Some testimonies will include a gap when we did not grow, but we will show that at a point God revealed Himself and changed our hearts.
An Exercise to increase our Faith: Write out a short testimony of what Christ as done in your life. Share it in church! Ask your pastor or ABF teacher to give you an opportunity to share a three minute testimony about the difference Christ has made in your life!
